Gandhiji visited the district twice as a part of his tour to the princely state of Travancore. After his death, Gandhiji’s ashes were distributed among friends and family – some were immersed in the Triveni Sangam in Allahabad. At the same time, some ashes were placed in an urn in Kanyakumari for the public to pay homage to the great leader. Later, the ashes were immersed in the Triveni Sangam in Kanyakumari. The Gandhi Mandapam was built in 1956 to commemorate this event.

The memorial is inspired by the Orrisa style of architecture and is built to exact specifications. The central shape of the monument stands at 79 feet to represent his age at the time of his death.
